The Ayurvedic Rasayana
The Rasayana promotes overall physical and mental health, slows down the process of ageing, positively influences the skin, refreshes the memory, concentration and cognitive functions, provides relief from strain and stress and brings about mental relaxation. The proper nutrition and regeneration are best supported by milk, natural cane syrup, honey, clarified butter (ghee), oils, massages, baths, rest and sleep.
The general rejuvenation is further enhanced by positive behaviour, affirmative thinking, emotions and experiences; gracious communication, sharing of inspiration, broad mindedness, generosity, respecting others and ourselves. This allows us the ability to enjoy what we like and to dwell in the solitude of our own silence.
Revitalisation
When undertaking the Rasayana therapy, one should restrain from excessive physical and mental activity, consumption of stimulants, mental disturbance, intense communication and watching TV. On the contrary it is advisable to seek calm places and to enjoy the beauty of nature; to do sports, exercises or yoga and meditation.
Rasayana is especially suitable for the Vata constitutions, for it helps them to stimulate the power of the digestive fire and metabolism, as well as gaining healthy weight and restoring psychological balance, before the chill of autumn and winter sets in.
The Power of the Digestive Fire
Agni or biological fire of the digestive system resides in the stomach and controls all metabolic transformation of the body. The optimal metabolism, promotes good digestion, assimilation and transformation of food, as well as the sensory perceptions, nutrition of bodily tissues and cells.
It also facilitates strong immunity, vitality, sound health, good eyesight, body temperature and colour of skin. It produces joy, enthusiasm and the feeling of satisfaction, supplies the body with life energy, courage and confidence, brings stability and patience, stimulates brightness of mind, logical thinking and maintains the cell intelligence.
The Constitutional Metabolism
The harmonious metabolism, operates in the body only if biological humors of Vata, Pitta and Kapha are found in balance and harmony with its individual constitution. In case of Vata imbalance, the metabolism becomes irregular and causes digestive disorders, flatulence, constipation, diarrhoea or intestinal colitis. It may also cause joint and lumbar spine pain, sciatica, gingival recession, dryness of the skin and emotional instability manifested as agitation, anxiety, insecurity and fear.
When Pitta becomes aggravated, the metabolism gets faster and causes digestive disorders connected with gastric hyperacidity, nausea, diarrhoea, inflammation of the digestive tract and liver, accompanied by the feeling of anger and animosity. As a result of excessive Kapha, the metabolism slows down and causes the stagnation of digestion, mucus in the stomach, allergies, respiratory problems, overweight, high blood pressure and diabetes together with the feelings of fatigue, drowsiness and physical weakness.
Chyawanprash
One of the most effective Rasyjana elixirs is Chyawanprash due to its rich content of the Ayurvedic herbs which have the adaptogenic effect, such as: tinospora cordifolia, centella asiatica, withania somnifera, asparagus racemosus and emblica officinalis. Other adaptogenic herbs in Chyawanprash include: terminalia chebula, terminalia bellirica, ocimum sanctum, curcuma longa, tribulus terrestris, piper longum, boerhaavia difusa and glycyrrhiza glabra.
